Occasion Types allow you to create 32 different categories for your occasions. Each type can have a different advance notification period, text style and alert sound. Make really important categories bright red or trivial categories fade into the background with the appropriate choice of color or style.
One Set of Types per Mac
Types are saved in the Settings file and are separate from but shared by all of your occasion files. Be careful when sharing occasion files on a network or moving them between different Macs. Each machine has its own Settings and its own set of Types (see the Preferences chapter for info about copying the Settings file.)
The Occasion Types are viewed or changed by selecting Occasion Types in the Remember? menu.

(1) the Occasion Type list
The names of all 32 occasion Types. Click on one to see its definition, or use the UP/DOWN arrow keys. Click and drag a name up or down to re-arrange the list order.
Active Occasion Types
Only those types above the dotted line appear in the Occasion window's Type menu. The remaining types cannot be selected, but their occasions still appear in your lists. You can streamline your Type menu by dragging unused types below the line or by dragging the dotted line itself.
Occasion Type Priorities
Types higher in the list have a higher "priority" than those below. The color and style of the What's Happening calendar day for that date is taken from the highest priority Type. For the same date and time, higher priority occasions are listed before lower types. There is also a Preference item to list each date's occasions by Type rather than by start time.
(2) Name
Change the name of the selected type by entering it into this box. The name in the list is updated when you select a different type.
(3) Default Occasion Type Checkboxes
The Type with a check in the A box is the default type for Add New Occasion in the Remember? menu, as well as most other methods to create a new occasion. The B box Type is used for new occasions created by Add "To Do" item. The current default A & B Type(s) are shown in bold in the type list.
(4) Advance Notification menu
Used by the startup checks and the Of Interest date range to determine how far in advance you should be notified for occasions of this Type:
- None
No advance notification. The occasion are ignored by Of Interest and the starup checks. The "Trivia" type is an example.
- Standard
Use the default advance notification period. Pre-set to seven (7) days, but you can change it in Preferences.
- Special
Select a custom period from 0 (same day) to 39 days in advance.
(5) Prefix and Text Style
The Prefix string appears before the occasion's description in What's Happening lists. Provides a distinctive marker for each Type. The prefix can be at most 8 character long, but you might want to stick with 1 or 2 characters because occasion lists are indented to allow room for the longest prefix.
Click the [Style...] button to change the font, size, style and color for this Type. The style is used in What's Happening lists and for the pop-up alert icon color.
The sample box gives a preview of the prefix and text style.
The Prefix string is drawn using the Type's text style, or you can select a different text style in Preferences. The Zapf Dingbats font provides interesting symbols.
(6) Alert Sound
Select the sound to play at Alert time for occasions of this Type. Use any of the sounds in your System file, or select System Alert Sound for the standard system beep.
This same sound is played when an important occasion is found at startup.
(7) Action Checkboxes
The first two items let you select what happens at pop-up alert time. Turn off both if you never want alerts for occasions of this Type. Alternatively, just don't enter an Alert time for them. There are Preference items to disable all alert windows or sounds.
Turn off the third checkbox to omit occasions of this Type from What's Happening lists. Some folks define a Type for school related occasions and turn them off during the summer.
(8) Exit buttons
Click OK to end the dialog and save your changes, or Cancel to discard them (Cancel is disabled until you make a change.)
Pre-defined Occasion types
A sample set of Types are provided. Feel free to change them any way you like. They are only provided to give you a few ideas.
You should probably not remove the Trivia type. The sample occasions use it, as do other large collections that are available.
